president obama did with david gregory he taped it yesterday afternoon at the very same honor that mcconnell was actually trying to get a deal done. so to me, the president actually wants an argument more than a deal. he could have been helpful and instrumental in getting things done every six months to go through a budget crisis with president obama, he could figure out a way to lead and bring people together earlier. they can't call in mitch mcdonnell until the 26th and complain he was there at the last minute. i think there's a lot to be done to improve legislative affairs at the white house and would ultimately help president obama. >> and said about that, but mcconnell is still is late, he could have imposed himself, and not the way he does it. here is the fundamental problem. leaving aside the policy issue which i know is important to you all. if i get down to politics on bumper stickers, you're holding all of this up, including people's tax cuts it defend millionaires, that's all we have to say. >> and the democrats all agree that the bush tax cuts were the-- were good for the economy

an industry with david gregory from "meet the press." other than that, we don't have a readout of what's happening and we're hoping to get more information as the day wears on about what, specifically, he's done and how he's been engaged in these talks, but right now my sources at the white house are not reading out any of the discussions that may or may not have happened behind the scenes here. >> kristen welker, appreciate that. >>> the senate reconvenes and we do know talks in the works on the hill and nbc's luke russert filling us in now on what you know to be happening at this hour. what say you, good sir? >> hey, how are you doing, craig? talks are under way on capitol hill. we know mitch mcconnell is here. we assume harry reid is here and their staffs are going back and forth. i spoke to one aide who said don't expect for any details to leak tonight. they'll be closed-lipped about this because the idea if anything does leak out it gives more of an opportunity for folks on either party to kill a deal if they don't like what they hear. some sort of a agreement will be announced to

david gregory and he held up a magazine and he's being investigated? guest: i think is a much ado about nothing. apparently the folks at nbc checked to make sure it was legal and they got bad advice, i don't think it will go anywhere. host: rose, go and head with your comment or question. caller: i'm so privileged to talk to you this morning. this is an idea i've thrown around but nobody listens. i have an idea that cops even have to account for bullets. why does anybody need 300 bullets? why can't we ration those and there's nothing in the constitution that would stop that. but this thing about the database is ridiculous. you have to have a license to own a dog or drive a car. why talk about it if we can't do? we could ration bullets, don't you think? guest: this is an idea that has been discussed and it's one way to do is tax ammunition. that is something that folks have talked about. rationing probably isn't going to work legally or politically. the way the supreme court ruled in its gun cases it said that outright bans or rationing of certain types is probably not constitutional. no

. >> we're taking your phone calls. republicans' line -- also just an update david gregory from "meet the press" says that president obama is going to appear on the show this weekend. we heard from the president a little bit ago. he still wants to get a deal done and he talks about the affects of the tax increases. we're going to bring you his comments in just a little bit. we're going to head to washington where bob is on the line. >> my comment is, i think the president is wrong. he wants to tax the people who actually provide the jobs for the country. and it is always tax us now and spending cuts later and i don't think the spending cuts are ever going to happen. if they do, it will only be for a short period of a couple of times before the base line budgeting will eat up the cuts. it is always tax, tax, and spend. this country can't afford that anymore. we can't pay what we o'now. >> willard is on the line from san diego, california. let's try one more time for willard. moving on to monica, she's in florida on the republicans line. >> yes, i was listening to the president speak ab
